Courtyard garden design - an indoor window frames a modern garden design with an ancient oak tree

COURTYARD GARDEN Design

Mid-century Modern residence, United States

A young family underwent a major renovation of their mid-century modern home. Forming part of a collaborative team of architect, interior designer and builder, a landscape master plan was created in order to allow the clients to phase the project over time. An entrance courtyard was the most important for the initial phase and was executed in time so that the home could be featured on a prestigious architecture home tour by the American Institute of Architects.

Mature oak trees were protected and the central tree was given a new open end Corten planter to ensure its future health while portraying its key focal presence in the courtyard. Large doors open onto the courtyard, and the clients intended to spend a lot of time under the shady canopy. A custom steel disappearing water feature in gravel is a sensorial focal point under the large, central window allowing for a contemplative space. Planting is soft with full seasonal interest from ornamental grass, evergreen shrubs, climbers and an ornamental lily. A low, custom steel angled fence provides a semi transparent barrier and acts as a transition into the courtyard from the street.
