Coastal Garden Design

Seaside Villa Port Andratx, Mallorca, Spain

Our clients sought our help after an invasive goat problem destroyed their seaside garden. They were keen to redesign the garden in a more contemporary style while making it more conducive to entertaining. The existing garden was installed several years back with a large amount of lawn and many areas that were poorly designed or neglected.  The walk up to the front door included a large olive tree that was inappropriately placed producing a dark, cramped uninteresting corner that suffered soil erosion. The entrance was converted into short terraced stone walls with textured planting layers to create interest and depth making the garden appear larger. In the lower garden facing the sea, a stone terrace was given a new contemporary outdoor kitchen, dining furniture and a custom Renson louvered pergola with heaters to be enjoyed year-round. Large olive trees were installed to help shield the afternoon sun and provide a sculptural feature from inside the home.  As well, a new sunken lounge seating area with a fire table creates the perfect spot for drinking wine while watching the sunset.

Our clients were sustainably minded and allowed us to decrease the size of the lawn.  Gravel gardens were installed around the pool along with the sunken lounge seating. Mediterranean planting is designed to be contemporary in relation to the architecture and includes native olive trees and plants, succulents, ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs and edimentals.

Furniture was sourced by us and includes Paola Lenti and Roda. The importance of landscape lighting was fundamental for this entertaining garden so we elected to use John Cullen for its architectural lighting.

Designed by Tanya K Wilson during partnership with Mallorca Garden Design.

Terrain: rocky and sloped with direct access to the sea. Saline winds, contrast of blue sea and green landscape, soil erosion, need for minimal sea barrier to keep out unwanted goats while not forsaking sea views.

“We could not have imagined how spectacular the garden would look”

Tanya and Johanna took the time to understand the brief for our project and guided us through the process with patience. They proposed creative ways to both enhance the overall landscape of our garden and importantly to ensure that it was secured from invading goats!

We could not have imagined how spectacular the garden would look and it remains exciting to see how the planting evolves through the changes of seasons. We are enormously grateful to them for their dedication and care.
